Some of the beautiful grass fed cured meats
As a food photographer I am lucky that I get to visit some amazing places and work with some lovely people on a regular basis. A lot of the time is spent in fields harvesting, working on farms, in the sea on boats, in restaurants or in busy kitchens. Being able to be in that whole process is really special and actually seeing where and how the food is, ticks a lot of my mental boxes. I have always been around food, my parents ran a hotel when I was younger, so waking to smells of bread and cakes cooking at 5am was pretty much the norm.
Now I get to tell people’s food stories in pictures for magazines and PR. The food always looks good and with some lighting and styling, I can show the great produce people are making. Here are a couple of photos from a recent shoot I did for an organic farm using meat from their grass fed cattle.

Trencherman’s Guide Launch 2016. This week I was fortunate to be working with some fab chefs at the launch of the 24th annual edition of the Trencherman’s Guide at The Second Floor Restaurant at Harvey Nichols in Bristol. Their head chef Louise McCrimmon was joined by four other Trencherman’s chefs from across the South West to cook a stunning launch lunch for some of the region’s leading chefs and restaurateurs. The guide features write-ups on the top restaurants across the South West and has become the go to guide for foodies looking for good quality meals across the region. Being a food photographer and just being around good chefs in a restaurant, food, kitchen environment gives so many opportunities to get great photos, even if they are only for a split second. And yes, the food was delicious especially the starter and fish course!!..(personal favourites).
Pictured are left to right chefs Jude Karema (Kota, Cornwall) starter, Steve Pigeon (The Arundel Arms, Devon) canapés, Louise McCrimmon (The Second Floor Restaurant at Harvey Nichols) main course, Guy Owen (The Idle Rocks) fish course and Josh Eggleton (The Pony and Trap, Somerset) dessert at the launch in Bristol.

Probably one of my favourite subjects has to be musicians, especially guitarists. In the past I have photographed many well known gypsy jazz guitarists and I also play gypsy jazz on guitar, so having a small knowledge of the guitar definitely helps on these type of photographic assignments. Every guitarist has wonderful stories to tell and being there to listen and quietly snap away can be very rewarding. They are my favourite candid shots. I just wish I played more.

My kit bag involved a couple of Nikon D3s/D800 cameras and a Zeiss Milvus 100mm f/2.0 Makro ZF.2 lens coupled with a profoto flash. This gave me the slightly edgy look I was after: strong focus on the person, keeping the depth of field to a minimum. The photos appeared in the magazine then portraits were displayed in a photographic exhibition at the launch party of the magazine. Pictured above is the re:story magazine cover image which featured International ceramicist Sandy Brown.

The images were part of a triathlete training book with the majority of them taken around the South West coast. We managed to make use of the dramatic landscapes and good weather.

A recent shoot featuring classic cocktails with an edible floral twist, took me deep into the heart of Devon to the magical ‘Ever After – A Dartmoor Wedding’ venue near Tavistock. I get to photograph a wide range of subjects featuring everything from international chefs, restaurant interiors, producers in muddy fields to cooked dishes on a plate. This was a wedding themed shoot with cocktails featuring all manner of edible flowers. After research on the mood board themes, all the pastel colours and flower types naturally all fell into place on the day. This helped create the right feel needed by our client Nicola from the food photoshoot. I took and styled each shot following the brief, working with the mixologist Catherine Cheek of Christopher Piper Wines Limited. The beautiful edible flowers were from Maddocks Organics edible flower farm. We have recently launched the wedding side to the business at www.guyharropweddings.com and feedback has been great, so mixing up weddings with food and drink makes a perfect match.” All photos Guy Harrop.
